NKC Decisions
Decisions from the recent NKC meeting that may affect you..
- “Given the current economic outlook, the NKC has made the decision to delay the mandatory implementation of clutches in the National and Clubman classes until August 30, 2009. This decision effectively provides the competitors in these categories a further nine months to prepare.”
- The NKC has monitored the difference between this [Yamaha KT100J] engine and the Comer SW80 engine over the past few months. As a result of this monitoring, the current 13.5mm restrictor plate in the Yamaha engine will be replaced by a 13.0mm restrictor with an effective date of January 1, 2009. Drivers using a Yamaha engine will also have a minimum combined kart and driver weight of 100kg kilograms. “It is important that we ensure the engines in the category remain within the spirit of the regulations, which is why we have made this slight alteration to the performance of the Yamaha engine,” said Erdmann. “The intention of the Yamaha engine is for it to be a transitional engine for those competitors close to making the move into the Rookies category.”

Australian Bracket Racing Association (ABRA) racing at track 18/19 October
The track will be hired to ABRA on the 18th and 19th October.
This means that normal practice sessions on these days will not be held. If AKA NSW follows its usual practice regarding insurance suspension there will also not be any practice on the Friday 17th or Monday 20th.
Note, this is NOT an AKA sanctioned event. Any club members intending to take part must satisfy themselves that the rules and regulations covering the event are appropriate and covered by appropriate insurance.
For those unaware of what 'Bracket Racing' involves, the following information has been provided by ABRA:
Any Canberra Kart Club Racing members who are Non-ABRA members and who hold an AKA licence or have previous karting experience can participate in the weekend activities. You will need to obtain a membership/license and fill out any waivers for $35.00 which will cover you under ABRA insurance, paperwork will need to be completed on the Saturday upon your arrival. Plus a $10.00 fee for Saturday 18th practice and $20.00 for Sunday 19th October racing Total payable will be $65. Bracket Racing is a fun event and no trophies will be given out.
Bracket Racing enables you the racer to participate with other drivers of similar speed and skill. Bracket racing is more on the recreational and fun side and is a little less serious than AKA racing. However, scrutineering rules of karts are similar to those of the AKA rules for safety reasons.
Bracket Racing is a time controlled event in which the type of engine, tyre, chassis and even total weight of Kart and driver are irrelevant.
Lap times are the key factor. A driver nominates the group (or bracket) he feel's they can race in without having an unfair advantage. During the race and (without the aid of timing devices), should he have too much speed he will "break out" from the group - because all races are timed from start to finish and furthermore the driver is unaware of how much time has elapsed. The "Checkered flag" will be shown as stationary to those finishing early (breaking out) and waved to those finishing within the allotted time for that race. "Slowing dramatically" to avoid breaking out is dangerous and drivers will be charged and penalised. The "Last lap" flag is NOT used.
For more information regarding this unique concept, please visit the Australian Bracket Racing Association club website www.austbracketracing.wwkc.com.au

2008 Annual General Meeting
This year's AGM will be held at 7:30pm Wed 20th August at Deakin Soccer Club, Grose St, Deakin.
Note, this is 1 week later than we would normally hold our general meeting for August, and will replace the August general meeting.
All committee member positions and sub-committees are up for grabs. Several of the incumbents have indicated that they will not be seeking re-election, notably the President (splitter) and Promotions Manager (piker).
The other critical position that needs to be filled is the Canteen manager. So if you think you can help out with any positions please put your name forward. This can be done on the night of the AGM.
All positions need to be filled for the club to operate effectively. We had a great turnout for positions last year after threats to shut down the club if people didn't nominate, so let's see if we can get the same again this year without threats.

Control Airbox - Noise Induction Silencer
(Rule 25.24) APPLIES NOW.
According to Rule 25.24.a the new control airbox must be used on Midgets, Rookies and Clubman from 2nd April 08.
AKA NSW have issued the following 'clarifications' of the 'transition' period through to 1st May.
4 Apr 08 - AKA NSW
"Please be advised that although the control airbox is compulsory from the 2nd April, competitors will be given a transitional period until the 1st May 2008. During this time competitors who do not have the control airbox are to be issued a verbal warning only, penalties will not apply."
10 Apr 08 - AKA NSW
"A competitor can only be given a verbal warning once, this may occur at scrutineering or during competition depending when the offence has been detected. Once the verbal warning has been given the competitor must have the AKA control air box fitted to continue competition. Should a competitor not fit the Air Box and continue competition then all other penalties will apply."
Hence, if you are found to be using a non AKA43 airbox at scrutineering this weekend for the Zone Challenge, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RACE.

Midget Class - 100J Engine - Min 95Kg.
The following change has recently been made to the weights for the Midget class and will apply at the Zone Challenge this weekend.
"Competitors using the Yamaha 100J restricted engine in the
Midget class will have a minimum weight of 95kg. The NKC have made this
decision after receiving data from recent parity testing between the
Comer S - Comer SW and Yamaha J engines. This rule change to be
effective from Monday 14th April 2008.
This change will be closely monitored to make sure that parity of the 3 engines is achieved."

"A competitor is permitted to use one set of prescribed dry tyres AND only one set of prescribed
wet weather tyres in any class, including all practice from the commencement of the event /
competition, at any event."
As the event begins at midnight of the day of the event, this means that the FIRST time that you enter the track you must be using your race tyres.
At the Zone Challenge this weekend tyres will be marked on the first time that you form up on the grid and you will have to continue to use these tyres for the rest of the meeting.
(See what happens when you send us on Officials' training courses. We're forced to read the rules and apply them.)

Officials Training, Saturday 12th.
There will be a training course for officials this Saturday. If you need to renew your accreditation or become accredited, or just want to find out how the rules are interpreted, please come along.
Remember if you are a parent of a junior competitor you can still act as a Steward on race days.
The club needs a reasonable number of trained officials to help take the load off the small number of volunteers who currently do these jobs.
Training details:
Comfort Inn Airport
57-73 Yass Road
Queanbeyan
Commencing: 9.00am, typically finishes early afternoon.
Course Coordinator: Ron Harradine.
If you are coming you will need to bring 2 passport size current photographs and your current Officials Licence (if reaccrediting).

Working Bee, Sunday 13th.
A working bee will be held on Sunday 13th at 9am at the track. Please bring your own whipper-snippers and/or lawn-mowers.
There is lots to be cleaned up around the track in readiness for the 2 day Zone Series meeting the week after, so please come along and help to present the track in its best light.
Remember that to be eligible for Championship points for the year you need to attend at least one working bee (or officiate for a race day), so get in early and get it out of the way.

Round 3 Race Meeting, Sunday 16th March - Rotax tyre change
Round 3 of the Canberra championship will be held this Sunday 16th.
Rotax drivers should note that they need to be running Mojo tyres from the 1st March. This will be a requirement at this weekend's meeting.
Note, we are going to need extra support in the canteen this weekend at peak times, ie breakfast and lunch time. If you can help out for an hour or so, please volunteer your services on the day.

Track closed - 29th to 1st.
The track will be closed to members' practice from Friday 29th to Monday 1st inclusive, due to the hiring of the track to Prokart for racing on the weekend.
If you are wondering why the track needs to be closed on Friday and Monday as well, it is due to some bureaucratic nonsense on the part of the AKA NSW/Insurance company who have dictated that there shall be an extra days leeway on either side of any insurance suspension. So if you are not happy, direct your venom at them, not the committee.

Race Meeting Sunday 20th
The first race meeting for the year will be held this Sunday 20th.
See the Race Calendar for dates of future meetings.
Please note, the last general meeting voted to increase the entry fees by $5 per competitor. This has been done to enable the club to engage permanent flag marshalls so that races are not delayed waiting for members to volunteer to do the jobs as has happened so often in the past.

Open Performance Class
CKRC would also to like to inform members that we will be running the Open class at the January meeting, and future meetings if the numbers of competitors warrants. Note, this will be an experimental class for this year with a view to making it a competition class if demand is sufficient.
This is a positive step forward for Canberra and will enable racers to dust off their karts that have sat in the garage for years, enabling racers to race once again in classes that have been forgotten over the years.
People who are able to run in the open performance class will need to adhere to chapter 27 of the rules.
27.08 Limitations on Drivers:
To be eligible to compete in this class, a competitor must hold a minimum of an AKA B Grade licence.
27.01 Engine Eligibility:
